Resumé
Activase, or alteplase, is the FDA-approved drug for treating acute ischemic stroke. It works by converting plasminogen to plasmin, dissolving thrombus and restoring blood flow to salvageable tissue in the penumbra. Treatment must begin within three hours of symptom onset, with careful patient selection to minimize bleeding risks.
