Penny candy, a childhood favorite since the late 1800s, originally cost one penny. It gained popularity with the introduction of Tootsie Rolls and other candies at Woolworth's stores. However, the decline of penny candy began in the 1980s, and while specialty stores exist, the nostalgic experience is largely a memory now.
