Isaac Newton's experiments on light led to the understanding of afterimages and pressure phosphenes. Afterimages occur when photoreceptors in the retina bleach from bright light, causing temporary visual effects. Pressure phosphenes arise from physical distortion of the retina. Both phenomena illustrate the complex interplay between light perception and the brain's processing.
